				Shin Splints
What is it?
- Shin pain over the inside, lower half of the leg
 
- Pain at the start of exercise which often eases as the session continues
 
- Pain often returns after activity and may be at its worse the next morning
 
- Pain when the toes or foot are bent downwards
 
What causes it?
- Over-pronation of the feet (Flat Feet)
 
- Oversupination of the feet (high arches)
 
- Inadequate footwear
 
- Increasing training too quickly
 
- Running on hard surfaces
 
- Decreased flexibility at the ankle joint
 
Treatment
- Rest to allow the injury to heal
 
- Apply ice or cold therapy in the early stages, particularly when painful.

What can Barefeet Podiatry do to help?
- Advise on stretching/strengthening exercises for  the  muscles of the lower leg
 
- Perform a biomechanical assessment and gait analysis to determine whether you are over pronating or supinating and prescribe custom orthotics accordingly.
 
- Taping can be applied for support
 
- Advise on appropriate footwear
