Shin Splints
What is it?
  • Shin pain over the inside, lower half of the leg
  • Pain at the start of exercise which often eases as the session continues
  • Pain often returns after activity and may be at its worse the next morning
  • Pain when the toes or foot are bent downwards
What causes it?
  • Over-pronation of the feet (Flat Feet)
  • Oversupination of the feet (high arches)
  • Inadequate footwear
  • Increasing training too quickly
  • Running on hard surfaces
  • Decreased flexibility at the ankle joint
Treatment
  • Rest to allow the injury to heal
  • Apply ice or cold therapy in the early stages, particularly when painful.

  • Advise on stretching/strengthening exercises for  the  muscles of the lower leg
  • Perform a biomechanical assessment and gait analysis to determine whether you are over pronating or supinating and prescribe custom orthotics accordingly.
  • Taping can be applied for support
  • Advise on appropriate footwear
